Case Study - J - Resource Centre
Antecedent and brief history
J joined as at the Resource Centre in July 2006, aged 19 years. He was diagnosed with Autism at the relatively late age of twelve and this belated diagnosis had evidently had a detrimental affect on his development. J had a history of failed school placements, owing largely to a lack of knowledge and understanding in regard to his particular needs. This was a reflection of the relatively poor state of educational provision in the Liverpool area at that time. Placed at a residential school in the Midlands, J entered a crisis period, with challenging and extreme behaviours. Unable to cope, the school excluded him. This was not the first, or the last instance of school expulsion during J's Childhood.
Assessment and Person Centred Planning
When J left education, aged 19, his newly-appointed adult social worker undertook the search for a meaningful adult day service within the Liverpool area that could meet J's complex needs. At this point, we were invited to assess J and plan and implement a transition into the progressive and highly person-centred service we offer here at the Walton Progressive Resource Centre. We were chosen, I believe, owing to our extensive knowledge and experience within the fields of autistic spectrum disorder and associated disorders.
Progress and outcomes to date
Since joining our service, J has made remarkable progress in his social and life skills. I firmly believe that this has been due to the quality of J's highly individualised programme and the skills of the people facilitating within the service. J is currently in the process of moving into his own supported living tenancy home and is looking forward very much to a future of optimum independence and quality of life.
