Walton Progressive School, Liverpool
Located in the Walton area of Liverpool, Walton Progressive School opened in 2000. On this site the school provides a safe and secure co-educational environment for up to 30 boys and girls, aged 8 - 19 years, with highly complex needs.
All pupils have a statement of special educational needs and whilst most have severe or profound learning difficulties, some also have sensory or physical disability. The school can also support pupils with an acquired brain injury. In many cases the children have a diagnosis of Autism and behaviours that may be challenging in social settings. A large number of pupils have been excluded from their previous schools or have indeed failed to attend a school.
Walton Progressive School Policies and Procedures

Aims & Objectives
The school's aims are to help children towards a better future by providing the highest quality of education where inclusion, enrichment and progression enable achievement for all children by focusing on their specific and complex needs.
The school is divided into three distinct areas named Acorn, Oak and College and pupils are grouped in these areas according to their learning needs.
All children are supported on a one to one basis and have their own individual classroom with opportunities to join peers for group work throughout the day. Opportunities for the application of wider skills in a range of community based settings are also provided: these include horse riding, music therapy and work experience. The school provides a broad, needs based curriculum alongside meaningful skills training to children who, because of their individual needs are struggling to access regular education provision.
A 24 hour curriculum is also offered for those children accessing our residential services, complimenting a 38 week academic year.
The school follows the National Curriculum and formulates Individual Education Plans for each child. Reviews are held every six months. The school is staffed with a highly skilled and qualified team of professionals and offers a wide range of educational and therapeutic resources, placing emphasis on the National Curriculum, communication and self directed behaviour strategies for a life long learning programme. We offer a complete educational package at key stages and aim to return pupils to mainstream provision where possible.
The education centre has built an excellent reputation for its successful achievements in behaviour modification and prides itself in 'turning the corner' for many children who, prior to placement, have been excluded often from several educational establishments.
Ofsted recently commented that " The school makes an outstanding transformation in pupils' personal development, through a climate of high expectations and expert knowledge about pupils: it is highly successful in improving their readiness for learning. Pupils make good progress academically and outstanding improvement personally, especially in reducing their anxiety and making learning, school and especially their lives a pleasure."
Perhaps a measure of how we re-engage our pupils with learning and life is a comment from a parent "Thank you for giving my son back to me. There were so many dark days before he came to you".
